Haiken unveils new showroom during Clerkenwell Design Week
Haiken unveils new showroom during Clerkenwell Design Week
Haiken is on a mission to change the way people think about office furniture – starting with its newly redesigned showroom
A fresh face on the London office furniture scene, Haiken will complete its new showroom just in time for Clerkenwell Design Week. During the event, Haiken plans on showcasing its wide range of design-led, flexible office furniture products in an inspiring setting – including some exciting new additions.
A new soft and outdoor seating range will make its way into the refreshed showroom, alongside Haiken’s latest approach to a height-adjustable desk. Haiken recognises the utmost importance of health and wellbeing in the workplace and aims to make a positive impact with its new furniture additions.
Managing Director of Haiken, Craig Gulley, says, “We’re extremely excited to take this next step as a business. Having our showroom refurbished is a vital part in showcasing how our office furniture can create inspiring workplaces. We can’t wait to welcome everyone during Clerkenwell Design Week.”
Alongside its elegant approach to the traditional office setting, Haiken has introduced modern solutions to age-old challenges, such as the ergonomics-focused Flexure range of desks. Height-adjustable desks can prevent back problems, increase performance and improve circulation. The new introduction to the Haiken range has a telescopic frame that makes it future-proof for the ever-changing workforce. Flexure will appear alongside Haiken’s variety of task seating, which is fully adjustable and offers incomparable user comfort.
To support its ongoing mission to create inspiring workplaces built for the future, Haiken has teamed up with new partners, including lighting design firm Synergy, to put the showroom in its best light. By partnering with inspiring companies who transform interior spaces and exceed customer expectations, Haiken is able to push forwards with its goal to offer unique styles of furniture that will shape the way office furniture is seen and create inspiring workspaces.
The project’s lead interior designer, Simeon Thompson from JSJ Design, said, “As well as offering a design-led backdrop for Haiken’s furniture, the new-look showroom features lounge areas for visitors to dwell and consider their own designs. We’ve created pockets of visual interest using light and incorporated nods to biophilic design with natural materials, planting and a living wall. The overall feel is a calm, creative space.”
In addition to new partners, Haiken remains loyal to the partnerships it has established over the years. This includes the award-winning Noti furniture, which will be featured within the showroom. The Noti furniture range is created using products, services and technologies that reduce environmental impact. Haiken does this by bringing down the consumption of energy, raw materials and other valuable resources, something that Haiken truly values.
Haiken will also be showcasing Zilenzio products, which create healthy acoustic surroundings in various settings by employing an innovative and elegant approach to sound absorption. Zilenzio is committed to quality and sustainability by using products such as stone wool made from natural stone containing no plastic or dangerous substances, as well as FSC certified wood sourced from responsibly managed forests. Zilenzio furniture such as the Mezzo wheeled whiteboard, the sound-absorbing Arc floor screen and the mobile Zorla planter will be available to view in Haiken’s new showroom.
Similar to Noti and Zilenzio, Haiken is building a sustainability focus into the materials it uses for its range of products. Some of the new furniture range will use Fenix materials, which is anti-fingerprint. With daily use, micro-scratches on the surface are also thermally repairable, giving the material a longer lifespan. Furthermore, Fenix is now carbon neutral, meaning that based on the total quantity of square metres sold monthly, Fenix contributes to the reduction of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. As sustainability is part of Haiken’s values, teaming up with businesses that focus on sustainability and making the world a better place helps Haiken to create a better tomorrow.
A key element of creating a better future is enabling workspaces that support the hybrid model. Haiken knew it was crucial the new office furniture presented in its showroom redesign reflected the hybrid future of the workplace as much as possible, including a new co-working desk allowing for improved collaboration among employees in workspaces.
Alongside its office furniture, Haiken has introduced smart storage solutions with built-in technology from LoQit. The state-of-the-art smart locker system is easy to use and allows workers to have an allocated smart locker to hold their personal belongings and charge their phone, while the user-friendly system provides the administrator with a low burden through the self-management application. From locker management software to cloud management and system integration, the smart storage solution Brunel makes it possible. Smart technology such as this is perfect for workspaces that are changing to a more hybrid working model as the smart lockers are flexible and provide an easy-to-use space to store items away.
Haiken’s new showroom provides a platform to showcase its office furniture in an inspiring setting. It is set to unveil its newly designed showroom at 121-131 Rosebery Avenue during Clerkenwell Design Week, which commences on 24 May. Visitors will be able to discover Haiken’s new office furniture on display while enjoying a range of refreshments, including made-to-order bubble waffles. Haiken and Synergy will also be hosting a series of thought-leadership discussions featuring leading industry figures such as Basha-Franklin’s Creative Director Nicola Osborn. Pre-registration will be essential for the panellist discussions.

How working from home is the solution, the DropTop.™ story.
How working from home is the solution, the DropTop.™ story.
An environmentally passionate entrepreneur believes his Covid lockdown-inspired invention will “help reduce our carbon footprint and improve the way we work and live”.
Pith & Stem is a startup dedicated to producing sustainable furniture. They use reclaimed wood, steel and plastic to create bespoke and unique centrepieces.
Based in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, the business has flourished since the pandemic with its convenient and compact retractable desks – the DropTop.™ - proving a hit with those working from home.
Founder Stefan Husanu, 28, also owns a successful construction firm that he established three years after moving to the UK in 2011.
On his journey to creating Pith & Stem, Stefan said: “The construction firm is established, it has 50 employees and is involved in some of the biggest projects in and around London.
“I started the firm with £3,000 of savings. Today our turnover is £2 million and it’s my main source of income, but isn’t my passion.”
“I am passionate about our future, sustainability and I want to use business to make a positive contribution to the environment.
“I believe one-off, bespoke furniture can – and should be – made from almost entirely recycled and sustainable materials.
“We have available to us a wealth of reclaimed materials, already extracted and processed. Each piece has its own perfect imperfections but instead of using them, we look for ways to destroy them or dispose of them in the natural environment.
“These materials can’t be used everywhere but can look much better than virgin materials when used correctly.”
Pith and Stem’s name echoes what his business is all about - using the bits that would otherwise end up in the bin. Stefan and his team turn these unwanted materials into something that is loved by people and reduces their environmental impact.
Stefan continued: “I want to avoid waste finding its way into an incinerator or the ocean. I want condemned materials to be turned into something beautiful that will be cherished for generations.”
Pith & Stem takes issue with the current approach to material supply – it is currently easier and cheaper to source new and virgin wood, metal and plastic products than it is to repurpose existing ones.
Every aspect of the operation has been carefully calculated to be as sustainable as possible throughout. The materials are predominantly recycled and sourced from local suppliers in order to minimise transport emissions.
Stefan said: “While it is easier to be carbon negative as a boutique company which produces one-off, bespoke pieces, I believe businesses can also scale sustainably. There are products that need to be produced by the millions to help us reduce our carbon footprint and they cannot always be made from recycled materials, but they can still be good for the environment in other ways.”
Pith & Stem is on a mission to prove this. The furniture manufacturer took a new turn in 2021 when it launched the DropTop. The first-of-its-kind desk comes pre-fitted with cabling and monitors and it transforms into wall art when not in use, making it a perfect working-from-home solution in an age of Zoom.
Stefan describes the thinking behind his flagship product: “I noticed the forced trend of working from home had considerably lowered greenhouse gas emissions and single-use plastic as fewer people were travelling to work. Many people hated it though. Working from home simply wasn’t as effective as being in the office. They wanted to get back to the pre-pandemic normal.
“Many things need to change across many industries but a huge cause of emissions and one that can easily change is people commuting to and from work. We simply cannot afford a future where everyone travels to work every day.”
“The pandemic proved that hundreds of millions of people can work from home, which comes with huge environmental benefits and we are on a mission to make working from home easy, stylish and fun.”
“Although there are many environmental, lifestyle and wellbeing benefits to working remotely, it won’t work in the long term if productivity levels drop, if it’s uncomfortable or if it’s simply a struggle.”
“The problem is that few people have a professional setup at home. Working 10 hours a day on a laptop, often in uncomfortable positions, does not compare well with the ergonomic office set-ups we were used to.”
“The main problem with modern properties is the limited space. People resort to all sorts of solutions. The most common is either a dining table or cramped desk with barely enough space for a keyboard, monitor and coffee cup.’
“Home desks usually take up lots of room but offer very little in terms of workspace. What if a desk could both be big and take up nearly no space?
“Productivity means multitasking and you can’t possibly multitask effectively on a single laptop screen. The 21st century home desk needs to offer plenty of screen real estate…”
“A desk is rarely attractive. It should be made to disappear when not in use. Why can’t it be turned into a decorative centrepiece?”
And that’s how it started.
DropTop.™ tackles all those issues by making it easy for everyone to have a powerful setup, without sacrificing space or style. It’s an ergonomic workstation that has been designed to maximise multitasking and productivity and was built for professional daily use. Its unique design gives the user ample workspace and plenty of screen real estate so that they can perform their work comfortably and use their time very efficiently minimising the need to work long hours. When closed DropTop.™ sits subtly out of sight and out of mind so that work and life can be kept at balance, allowing people to spend more time doing things that make them happy and not be constantly reminded of their work.
It is practical, stylish and good for the planet. We not only use carefully selected sustainable materials to make it but we also offset way more emissions by planting 10 trees for each unit we sell.
If you think of it it’s a no brainer.
Fewer people travelling, means fewer cars on the roads, fewer trains and buses, fewer fossil fuels used, fewer emissions. And it doesn’t stop there, the secondary effects are huge. Less oil extraction, less need for high-rise construction, less single-use plastic from the millions of daily lunches and morning coffees, fewer new public transport vehicles manufactured and so on. The more we limit our activities and the comforts around them, the smaller the environmental burden.
The release, which took place exactly one year after the UK-wide lockdown was first announced, was a massive success with international demand seeing the DropTop.™ sell out in a matter of hours
The concept is Stefan’s own and encapsulates everything great about Pith & Stem. Its design is simple yet sophisticated and marries an industrial sturdiness (a video on their website shows someone performing a backflip off one) with a modern, luxury feel. Fully integrated with in-built high-spec monitors and clever cabling, the desk is available in several configurations, allowing users to personalise their workspace for their own needs.
For each DropTop sold, Pith & Stem plant 10 trees through non-profit organisations committed to reforestation. They also plan to fund plastic clean-up projects with upcoming furniture lines.
Stefan wants to use his business as a force for good and hopes to pave the way for others to follow in Pith & Stem’s footsteps.

MEDIA RELEASE: Trafficked turtles and tortoises returned to the wild
MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 15 MARCH 2018
Trafficked turtles and tortoises returned to the wild
A new initiative to return trafficked reptiles to the wild has been launched with the successful release of 79 turtles and 10 tortoises in the Peruvian Amazon. A collaboration between Animal Defenders International (ADI), government authorities ATFFS Lima, the Regional Government of Madre de Dios, and organizations IRUPA, UPA, and Animal Voice, the release is intended to be the first of many, ensuring the future survival of the species. Sponsorship for the relocation of the animals to Taricaya Ecological Reserve was kindly provided by publishers Bizarro Ediciones and UPA.
ADI President Jan Creamer said: "It is such a joy to see these animals go back to the wild where they belong. A life of captivity is no life for a wild animal, and we look forward to returning many more to the habitats from which they were torn."
ADI veterinarian Ines Nole, who assisted in the relocation said: "We are very happy to give these animals their freedom and hope it will help highlight why wildlife should not be traded or kept in our homes".
IRUPA coordinator and veterinarian Milagros Ramos who helped care for the turtles, and assisted with their relocation said: "This is a new beginning and it is immensely satisfying to know that we can rehabilitate more turtles and tortoises, giving these neglected species the attention they deserve."
Wildlife trafficking is one of the biggest problems faced in Peru, and the authorities have sought the help of ADI and other animal protection groups as part of their efforts to end the illegal trade.
Most of the yellow-spotted river turtles, a species listed as 'Vulnerable', were seized from traders keeping them illegally in tubs, fish tanks or buckets. Sold as pets, members of the public are mistakenly advised the animals are easy to care for. Rehabilitated at authorized establishments in Lima over several months, the turtles, and tortoises, were transported to Taricaya Ecological Reserve near Puerto Maldonado, where they were released.
ADI has previously worked with the Peruvian authorities to enforce a ban on wild circus animals in Peru; during the mission over 100 animals were rescued from circuses, and the illegal wildlife trade, including lions, bears, monkeys and other animals. Native species were rehomed in their natural habitats, while the lions were returned to their native Africa, and a tiger to a sanctuary in Florida.
Taricaya Ecological Reserve is home to Andean bears Cholita, Dominga, Lucho and Sabina, who had been torn from the wild as cubs, and were trafficked, before being rescued by ADI from three separate zoos. It is also where Lily and Luciano, rescued by ADI from the illegal wildlife trade, were taken to join a spider monkey rehabilitation program. As wildlife officials cleared the group of seven monkeys for wild release, Lily gave birth to Litanji and two months later the family were taken to a safe release site with the rest of the group where they are now living free.

Media Release: Reaction as America’s largest animal circus closes after 146 years
MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 15 JANUARY 2017 America's largest animal circus closes after 146 years, ADI calls on all circuses to end wild animal acts
Animal Defenders International (ADI) has welcomed the announcement by Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus to close its animal shows from May, citing declines in ticket sales after earlier announcing a 'mood shift' among their consumers .After decades of exposing the cramped, barren conditions with long periods of time tied up and chained with no freedom of movement and a brutal training culture, ADI believes that public opinion has ended the suffering.
Modern audiences now have many entertainment options and do not want to see shows where animals are made to suffer for a few minutes of entertainment.
Jan Creamer, ADI President, said: "After decades of exposing the suffering of animals in circuses behind the scenes, we are pleased to hear that Ringlings has finally bowed to public opinion – it was a mistake for them not to see the trend away from animal shows to human-only performances over a decade ago. Circuses can survive without the animal performances."
Studies of the use of wild animals in traveling circuses show that in the circumstances of a traveling show, circuses cannot meet the needs of wild animals. Animals are confined in small spaces, deprived of physical and social needs, spending excessive amounts of time tied or chained up, shut in transporters and unable to move around. The abnormal, stereotypical behaviors seen in circus animals, rocking, swaying and pacing, indicate that they are under stress and not coping with their environment. ADI's video evidence has shown how these animals are forced to perform tricks through physical violence, fear and intimidation.
ADI has led the campaign to expose the suffering and educate the public around the world, providing video evidence, prosecutions and expert reviews. 34 nations have reviewed the evidence and taken action to end traveling circus performances. Across 27 states in the US, 66 jurisdictions have already decided to either ban or restrict the use of wild animals in traveling shows, due to concerns about public safety and animal welfare.
ADI is supporting Representatives Ryan Costello (R-PA) and Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), who launched Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act (TEAPSPA) in Congress last November. The congressmen have concluded that ending wild animal use is the only practical approach to deal with public safety issues and inspection and oversight problems repeatedly cited by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG).

BACKGROUND NOTES – worldwide movement to end use of wild animals in traveling shows The evidence that the suffering caused to wild animals by the constant travel, severe restrictions on movement and unnatural lifestyle has prompted authorities and governments around the world to end their use.
66 cities/counties in 27 states across the US have taken action to restrict wild animals from traveling circuses. And around the world, hundreds of local ordinances are in place, including over 200 in the UK, all across Europe, Latin America and elsewhere. National restrictions on performing animals in traveling circuses, either wild or all animals, have been enacted in 34 countries – Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Malta, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovenia, Sweden, Taiwan and The Netherlands. Similar laws are under discussion in the US, UK, Brazil, and Chile.
Whether it is a traveling circus, or travel from county show to county show, the confinement for the animals is the same:
